The Importance of a Daily Skincare Routine

The skin has 3 layers:

  1. Epidermis (outer layer) - provides a waterproof barrier.

  2. Dermis (middle layer) - contains connective tissue, hair follicles and sweat glands

  3. Subcutaneous tissue - made of fat and tissue.

From as young as 20 our collagen production decreases along with the skin's natural process of exfoliating dead skin cells, which creates an accumulation and the need to manually exfoliate.

In our 30s and 40s skin loses its elasticity, appearing duller and less plump.

From the age of 50 onwards the skin becomes dry as the sebaceous glands produce less oil.

There are also extrinsic factors such as sun exposure, pollution and smoking which can cause the skin to age. Regular and lengthy exposure to the sun’s rays affect the skin’s natural production of melanin, causing discolouration.

A good skin care routine can help prevent the skin from ageing as quickly and to combat the above factors.

It is recommended to exfoliate once a week to help remove dead skin cells, which can accumulate and create a barrier against hydrating serums, hindering absorption.

There are 5 principles to a good DAILY skincare routine:

  1. Cleanse and Tone - morning and evening. Cleansing removes any environmental pollutants, make up or excretions, whilst toning balances your skin’s pH levels.

  2. Prevention against environmental factors - Vitamin C is important in protecting against damage from free radicals, as well as boosting collagen production.

  3. Hydrate - replenish moisture in the skin.

  4. Moisturise - creates a barrier to prevent moisture loss and helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

  5. Protection SPF50 - a high factor sunscreen helps to protect against visible signs of ageing and environmental damage.
